Terms and Conditions

UTMB and our affiliates reserve the right to limit or discontinue your access to the MyChart service if you do not meet these terms and conditions.

Communication with your provider(s) via MyChart secure messaging should only occur for non-urgent matters. Both parties must accept the arrangement.

Available Providers

Some providers may not communicate with their patients electronically. Others may ask an associate, such as a nurse or billing person, to contact you based on the subject matter contained in your secure message. Providers who choose to offer this service to their patients will be listed in the UTMB Provider Directory or our affiliates' directory.

Use of MyChart for Health Care Services

MyChart should only be used for non-urgent matters; it should not be used in emergencies. If you are experiencing a sudden or severe change in your health, or otherwise need an immediate response, call 911 or contact your provider’s office by telephone.

Your physician may choose to select an associate to help manage and respond to your messages based on the subject matter of your message. This may include nursing staff or other administrative staff responsible for making appointments or other requested services.

Depending on the circumstance(s), your physician may wish to consult with another UTMB or our affiliates' physician in order to facilitate your request. In these cases, your physician may forward secure messages as appropriate for diagnosis, treatment, and other related reasons. As a result, UTMB or affiliates' staff (other than your provider) may have access to secure messages that you send if it is necessary to provide you with a quality response. Neither UTMB nor our affiliates will forward your secure messages to independent third parties without your prior written consent, except as authorized or required by law.

In order to retain the effectiveness of the MyChart service, UTMB and our affiliates' physicians will not use this service to discuss your treatment if the communication involves information related to the following:

• HIV
• Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
• Substance Abuse

In addition, this communication service is restricted to adults. UTMB and our affiliates' physicians will not communicate with minors under the age of 14 years electronically.

All correspondence within MyChart will be automatically documented in your medical record.

Patient Rights and Responsibilities

As a patient, you have the right to restrict access to your medical information. While using this service, you, the patient, must control who has access to your user ID and password. The protection against unauthorized access is a shared responsibility between you and UTMB and our affiliates. To ensure the highest level of security, do not share your login/access information with anyone.

If you have been dismissed from a department or provider's care, you may not use MyChart with that department or provider. If you are incarcerated by the Texas Department of Corrections, you will not have access to information in MyChart during incarceration, nor will your proxy.
